Very user friendly European distro

KNOPPIX is a complete GNU/Linux distro that boots and runs completely from CD. Ideal to learn

Must be the best choice for newbies.

Gentoo Linux is a Linux distribution geared towards power users. It has an advanced package management system called Portage, a true ports system in the tradition of BSD ports, and allows for great flexibility and control.
